Th rebranding campaign, undertaken by a university-wide committee made of athletics, marketing, alumni, and administration representatives, in collaboration with Charleston graphic designer Gil Shuler, coincides with the school's move from the Southern Conference to the Colonial Athletic Association. Last year, the school decided to jump to the CAA in an effort to garner attention for the school with a national audience as schools across the country move away from traditional regional conferences, leaving newer major conferences to vie for lucrative national TV deals.
The new logo features a traditional uppercase "C" with a variety of alternate configurations that add "Charleston" and "The College." Alternate cursive logos reading "Cougars," "Charleston," and "The College" were also shown off. 7-foot tall Cougar center David Wishon tweeted a picture of the new-look basketball court featuring the new "C" logo at center court and "CAA" replacing the old SoCon logos.
“Like our decision to move to the CAA, the rebranding process was thorough and thoughtful,” Director of Athletics Joe Hull said. “Our new athletics logo gives us an opportunity to build on our brand identity on a local, regional and national level. When our coaches and student-athletes step onto a playing field or into a gym, we need an identifiable mark that sets us apart and sends a strong message that, ‘We Are Charleston.’ We believe the new logo system accomplishes this, especially in recruiting and identifying ourselves with potential student-athletes.” ... “As the College receives more national exposure in the Colonial conference and in top media markets such as New York, Boston, and Philadelphia, this rebranding could not have come at a better time,” College President P. George Benson said.
