America’s favorite literal-minded housekeeper is turning 50 this year, and that calls for a celebration — maybe a sponge cake? “If you ask for a sponge cake, Amelia Bedelia will literally put sponges in the cake,” recalls Jacqueline Lee, a long-time Bedelia fan and the regional community relations manager for Books-A-Million. On second thought, maybe we’ll just stick with a chocolate cake. Books-a-Million is marking the big occasion with a visit from the Amelia Bedelia series’ current author, Herman Parish, who took over after his aunt and the original author, Peggy Parish, passed away. “It’s very rare to get an author of this stature,” Lee says. Fans will also get the chance to buy a special 50th anniversary edition of the original 1963 book and meet an Amelia Bedelia impersonator. Though the books are for children, Lee believes that everyone will enjoy this event. “Kids’ events are always the ones I’m most excited for,” Lee adds. “They bring out the kid in me.” Not literally, we hope.
