Marshview Community Farms has been in the Green family since 1892 and was revived for food production in 2007. Its lone organic acre feeds St. Helena Island in many ways. Sará Reynolds Green, a schoolteacher, and her husband Bill supply their Gullah Grub restaurant with food from their farm. Students work the land with them and learn how to grow, harvest, sell, and cook fresh food. They have a 14-week CSA with 25 people who all volunteer in some way or another at the farm. The Greens want to connect people to the land and give students experiences to help them build character and entrepreneurial skills. They use their fresh ingredients to cook Gullah dishes like Hoppin’ John, red rice, seafood gumbo, and fish stew.
