Spade & Clover is a mini-farm cared for by John Warren, an artist-turned-farmer growing food for the body and soul. He has worked on farms in Rhode Island, North Carolina, Washington, and South Carolina (with Joseph Fields Farm through the Lowcountry Local First apprentice program). His desire to live healthier, and an abundance of creative drive have energized his goal of providing nourishment to the Charleston community through naturally grown plants and earth-friendly practices. S&C started using a plot at Dirt Works to grow an acre and a half of flowers, fruits, and vegetables, including Southeast Asian varieties, using intensive biodiverse methods. Warren’s planted native and heirloom seeds selected for their supreme taste and unique appearance and is noted for selling ginger and turmeric. His production methods utilize companion planting, cover-cropping, crop rotation, and the mutually beneficial qualities of each cultivar as an alternative to herbicides, pesticides, and over-fertilizing. In the spring, he sells his produce at the Charleston Farmers Market, the Sunday Brunch Farmers Market, and the Johns Island Farmers Market. Warren specializes in a lot of Asian varieties and will be growing Asian cucumbers, sugar snaps, holy basil (great for tea), edible flowers, garlic, and leeks this Spring.
