It's all in the name. Literally jumping into the SEWE spotlight this year is LEEP, short for the Lowcountry Environmental Education Programs. On February 14 and 15, Ian Sanchez, executive director of LEEP, will present a lecture on the green group's Project WOW.
WOW, short for the Web of Water project (man, they sure love acronyms), is a documentary film that follows the LEEP crew as they kayak from the mountains of the Upstate all the way to Charleston Harbor. Along the way, the kayakers talk about our state's ecosystems — and its history.
One of the goals of Project WOW is to show children how the watershed effects their own lives. "So much of what happens in the United States can be connected to that and so much life is connected to that waterway," Sanchez says.
Another purpose of Project WOW is to get the kids interested in learning more about the environment. "There's so much to learn out there, and there's so much to offer in the natural world," Sanchez says.
