Cruise ships haven’t gotten the best reputation lately, what with cluttering up our view, polluting the water, and losing power on the open ocean. But even if you’re not eager to set foot on a real cruise ship, you can still feel the sea breeze and enjoy the party atmosphere of an ocean liner at Charleston Stage’s production of the Broadway musical Anything Goes. The story follows a lovesick Wall Street broker who falls in love at first sight with an heiress and follows her, as a stowaway, onto the ship she boards bound for England. Various madcap antics ensue to the tune of memorable Cole Porter songs like “I Get a Kick Out of You,” “It’s Delovely,” and of course, “Anything Goes.” The show first premiered in 1934, and has been revived several times. A wildly popular, Tony award-winning version is currently playing in New York. This lively performance has been fittingly chosen as the grand finale of Charleston Stage’s 35th Anniversary Season, and the huge song-and-dance numbers promise to bring the house down.
