If you're a fan of deep dramatic pathos and psychologically disturbing shifts, you probably need a laugh on occasion. And The 39 Steps was definitely that occasion. Charleston Stage's production of this hilarious play honored the best works of a great directorial mind and even welcomed his famed silhouette on stage for a cameo. This show was fun for everyone, but a real treat if you're a devoted Hitchcockian. The best moment occurred during an homage to North by Northwest during which Kyle Barnette was chased by silhouetted airplanes that are clearly held on sticks. It's a scene that has been lampooned all over television, but seeing it done on stage with such simple tools was priceless.
