It's not always a shame when a bookstore bites the dust. We managed to survive when the Waldenbooks in Charleston Place shuttered its doors, and we felt no guilt in scavenging its close-out merchandise. It is sad, however, when an independent store like the Ravenous Reader goes out of business. In August, City Paper columnist Will Moredock composed a sort of love letter to that shop and its owner, Pat Giacinto. "Pat was my dealer. I had her number in my cellphone," he wrote. "When I needed a fix, if she didn't have it on the shelf, she could usually get it in three or four days." Now, we'll just have to spend our money at places like Blue Bicycle Books, Book Exchange on Savannah Highway, and Sullivan's Trade A Book.
