Best Bostonian Bluegrassers

Joy Kills Sorrow

Joy Kills Sorrow’s sold-out performance at the Cistern was by far the highlight of our Spoleto season. Even though the bluegrass five-piece is made up of a bunch of Yankees (one of whom is technically, gasp, a Canadian), all educated at Boston’s best music schools, they proved they have the string-based chops to blow us Southerners away. It was easy for the audience to forget they were at an outdoor venue on the College of Charleston’s campus and not on someone’s porch, deep in the humid marsh, hearing an intimate concert between friends. Bonus points for playing a cover of the Postal Service’s “Such Great Heights.”
