2012 was the big breakout year for Hearst’s band Shovels & Rope, largely propelled by the strength of their album O’ Be Joyful and a series of sold-out shows in all the big cities. From the Crescent City to the Great Salt Lake, they’ve been proving — as the lyric in their song “Birmingham” goes — that “it ain’t what you got, it’s what you make.” Hail hail.
