Lunch, Dinner, & Late Night
Think Mexi-Cali and you've got the right idea. Plus tacos, tortas, quesadillas, Baja bowls, craft brews, and margaritas.
Mex 1 Coastal Cantina is a welcome addition to the West Ashley dining scene. The restaurant may not be near the water, but it’s got a huge surfer vibe (i.e. the kitchen is separated from the bar by a wall constructed of surfboards). This is a new venture for Jack Hurley, owner of Jack’s Cosmic Dogs, and diners won’t leave disappointed. The Baja-style eats beckon the hungry, and the impressive tequila list opens the door to a whole slew of fun. An array of tacos, quesadillas, and tortas make up the entrees, with the addition of tasty bites like guacamole and Mexican street corn. We’re partial to the Baja fish tacos and carnitas torta, but the Baja bowls are becoming a local favorite. Don’t forget to try one of the bangin’ cocktails. With Morgan Hurley’s creative infusions like the Tequila Mockingbird, you can’t go wrong. —Eric Doksa Dish (Winter 2014)
Pulledpork says... Mexican restaurants come in a variety of styles and flavors and this is a much needed addition to the Charleston food scene. This is Baja Mexican style which I have spent a fair amount of time sampling in the San Diego and Baja Peninsula of Mexico. Charleston finally has a fish taco done right with stand out guacamole and filling salads as well as lots of other options as well. I have not tried everything yet but what i have had is really very good and value priced. Great place to bring kids and did I mention that the beer selection is solid as well. This is the type of place my family and I will eat at often. Please open one in MT P area. ★★★★★
Agnes says... I've been four times now and I love the place. The food is fantastic and great beer selection. They have good service and nice atmosphere. I'm really impressed with the quality of the food. Between the people I've been with and myself we've tried a decent sampling of the full menu and I haven't been disappointed with anything. ★★★★★
Mel Smith says... Was not impressed with the food nor the service. 15 mins once seated to have the waitress take our drink order, 10 minutes to get those (non-alcoholic ones at that), then once food was order everything came out with onions on it although wasnt specified on the menu. I personally do not like onions and picked them off. Waitress noticed me picking them off but didnt feel the need to ask any questions. ★★★★★
