The idea is brilliantly simple. Take a guy who knows how to cook, pair him up with a kid who probably doesn't eat much more than fast food and stuff out of boxes, and let them teach each other a few things. Louie's Kids Big Chef/Little Chef competition not only gives overweight children the opportunity to learn their way around the kitchen, but more importantly it empowers them with possibility. For overweight kids, many of whom are plagued by powerlessness and low self-esteem, the Louie's Kids program offers them a way out of the obesity trap. The event does so much — it brings the community together, it lifts the kids up, it connects the chefs to the kids in a very real way, and it raises a lot of money for Louie's mission to fight the obesity epidemic through hands-on guidance and education.
