As soon as Gov. Nikki Haley took office last January, she declared war on arts funding. Luckily, the Statehouse had the wherewithal to override her inevitable veto. You know what arts funding pays for, Nikki, besides ETV, the creative industry, and rural arts programs throughout the state? It supports the S.C. Film Commission, who gave a $10,000 grant to Maria White for her short documentary The Debutante Hunters, a film that eventually went on to the Sundance Film Festival, winning the Audience Award. And there's a good chance that film would never have gotten made without that arts funding.
