We always hurt the ones we love, some poet or something or other once said. Not that it really matters. What matters is that the Charleston Amtrak station looks horrible. For one, there's the rusted "Charleston" sign that greets visitors to Charleston, and then there's the sad, decaying depot itself. It looks like something out of Iron Curtain-era Czechoslovakia or something. Now, we know the powers that be plan to build a new Intermodal Transportation Center — which will be a one-stop hub for Amtrak, CARTA, and the area's taxi companies — but come on, can't somebody, like, plant some flowers or something in the meantime? We don't want the first glimpse a tourist gets of Charleston to be rust-colored and paint-chipped.
