Long before my face matured enough to make a fake ID worth the trouble, coffee shops were my haunt. With bars out of the picture, a coffee shop offered culture, conversation, local songwriters, and even a slight caffeine buzz for a 15-year-old on a Friday night. Despite hanging out in bars and no longer drinking coffee, it's still a welcoming and relaxing hang at Alchemy. The coffee shop features regularly rotating art shows and musical and poetry performers. And beyond Alchemy's well-above-par java, their sandwiches and homemade soups are undeniably solid. Stop by any given afternoon, and you're likely to find a City Paper contributor penning a story for next week's issue.
