Ms. Mary Ravenel isn’t a big lady, but she’s got a big spoon, and she knows how to use it. Lunchtime at Huger’s can make a fat man sweat and a skinny guy run. Piles of turkey wings sit in a bath of hot gravy; crispy fried chicken is stacked five high under the lights; mac and cheese bubbles over the side of full-sized hotel pans. It’s an all-you-can-eat bonanza of some of the best soul food in town. If you want to see what Charleston food is really all about, skip those places with lines out the door, and head up King Street to the purveyors of Gullah soul.
