2210 Middle St. (Sullivan's Island)
Lunch & Dinner
Yummy fish tacos, grilled sandwiches, half-pound burgers, and pub grub. Voted Best Sullivan's Island Restaurant and Bar and Best Burger by CP readers.
Poe’s Tavern on Sullivan’s Island is one of the Lowcountry’s pioneers of big, sloppy, house-ground cheeseburgers. By day, it’s a bustling beach lunch spot, by night a raucous bar and grill. Edgar Allan Poe posters and memorabilia cover the rustic walls, and all the burgers are named after his tales, from the basic Gold Bug with a mundane slice of cheese to the fearsome Tell-Tale Heart with fried egg, bacon, and cheddar cheese. For my money, though, the Hop Frog with barbecue sauce, bacon, and Monterey Jack is the real masterpiece, especially when you combine it with a side of thin, crispy hand-cut fries and a local draft beer. Poe’s fish tacos are rumored to be pretty good, too, but with those big, beefy burgers demanding attention, we’re not sure how anyone would find that out. —Robert Moss Dish (Summer 2014)
tomas1981 says... I have never been treated so poorly in my life. My 2 year old hit his head and screamed in pain. When we were able to calm him down a few minutes later we placed our order. Literally, a minute later, the general manager, Travis, came over and asked "IS THERE GOING TO BE A PROBLEM HERE? YOU'RE KID'S YELLING IS DISTURBING!" Nevermind that he almost busted his head open and we were clearly emabarrased that we quickly requested boxes. On our way out, he took it upon himself to to tell us "BYE BYE!" As if he was the conquering hero that saved his patrons from the terrible 2 1/2 and 1 year old children. After we went home and put our kids to sleep for their nap, I went back to calmly let him know I have never been treated so poorly and wouldn't be coming back even though I have been there regularly for a decade. He actually told me he doesn't want to tell me how to raise my kids, but he had to look after his other customers comfort. Clearly he doesn't have kids, or he would have known that we were more worried about our son's well being than disturbing a few tourists sucking down horrible, overpriced Bloody Mary's at the bar. Way to go Travis, you clearly care about your regular customers. ★★★★★
skitpero says... All of my friends highly recommended Poe's as the best burger in town. We went there on a weekday afternoon to try it out. I ordered a burger medium-well and my girlfriend ordered hers medium rare... two totally different burgers. When I got mine, I cut it in half and realized it was rare. My girlfriends was well done. I sent my undercooked, cut in half burger, back nd when it was returned it was the SAME burger! They re-cooked my cut-in-half burger along with the cheese, onion straws and BBQ sauce that was already on it - AND it was still undercooked (they couldn't cook it on both sides because of the garnishes!) When I called the server over to tell her it was STILL undercooked she said "Well, what do you want it to look like??" Needless to say, this was my first and last visit to Poe's!! ★★★★★
mushymeatballh8tr says... If you want a burger that looks, and quite frankly, TASTES like a hockey puck, you would thoroughly enjoy Poe's. I recently moved to Charleston and being a cheeseburger lover, I went to Poe's after hearing everyone rant and rave. I usually give every place 2 or 3 chances, but I really wanted to like Poe's, so I gave it FIVE. I was disappointed 5/5 times. Each time I was served a blacked piece of meat with tons of condiments to disguise the fact that the meat was in fact charred. Seems to me, if you want a good burger in this town, you're better off making it at home! ★★★★★
