Although we love perusing French Quarter galleries, we've found that some of the most innovative local art can be found in less traditional venues. Local Market + Coffee Bar, formerly known as Muddy Waters, kicked off a new look and ownership in May with an art show featuring works by Badjon, Meta Sapient, and Proton Factories. Since then they've kept the walls filled with works by up-and-comers. City Lights is another place to order your coffee with a side of art. The space is tiny, but they manage to find room to host receptions for local artists like Kerry D. McMurry, Candace Patterson, and Will Kiser. The trend continues at other eateries, like Avondale's Oak Barrel Tavern, where Seth Corts and Lisa Abernathy teamed up for a joint show in July. Considering that not all artists can be — or want to be — represented by a gallery, we hope this trend continues.
