Last spring, local marketers and business owners took a page from other successful urban communities, telling tourists and residents to take a hike. King Street was closed to cars from Calhoun Street to Queen Street, with restaurants bringing tables out to fill parking spaces and various nonprofit groups and vendors hitting the street as well. Now, the city sponsors 2nd Sunday on King Street (running from Calhoun to Broad Street). It can be a hearty walk if you want to take the whole stretch in. But it has been so successful that other commercial corridors downtown are looking on with more than a little envy. Cars, your days may be numbered.
