Best Way To Let Loose And Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone

Ecstatic Dance

Staff Pick

Alexandra Seaman was inspired to start Ecstatic Dance Charleston after spending time in Hawaii, where every Sunday morning there would be a mass spiritual dance in the town where she was staying. Seaman’s dance circles, which started in yoga studios around town and have grown to larger spaces, are all about movement and nonverbal communication. There’s no drinking or cursing or bacchanalia; Ecstatic Dance is an invitation to simply move. Living in a world run by the big bad wolf of social media, it’s easy to feel self-conscious in these kinds of situations. Seaman says part of why she started Ecstatic Dance was to break away from this self-conscious mindset. “That’s the gift of the dance; it can set you free.” —Mary Scott Hardaway
