I feel for Marcus Lattimore, with all of my heart and soul — and with what little I have of the former and what remains of the latter that I didn't sell to the highest bidder. By most accounts, his college career is over with. Even worse, any chance that he has of playing pro ball is as iffy as the prospect of a Disney-helmed Star Wars trilogy being worth something more than a pile of bantha fodder.
But did the guy really deserve to have a day in his honor, especially one that essentially amounts to "You're fucked, kid. Here's a flipping trophy. Have a nice frikkin' life." Because, make no mistake, that's the exact message that S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley sent to the injured running back when she declared Oct. 29 Marcus Lattimore Day.
While some people have suggested that Haley issued a proclamation creating Marcus Lattimore Day to distract South Carolinians from the ongoing Dept. of Revenue hacking clusterfuck, as a Clemson fan I know better.
The truth of the matter is Nikki Haley is mocking the Gamecock faithful. She's rubbing salt in the wound. She's letting each and everyone of them know that all of their hopes and dreams have been dashed. This season will not be the championship season that the Gamecock fans had longed for—and at one point were cocksure it was going to happen. Some even surely even thought it was their destiny.
So don't kid yourselves. Haley's gloating here. There is simply no other explanation.
My best to Marcus Lattimore. I wish you a speedy recovery.
