College of Charleston’s basketball season kick-off event, Maroon Madness, lived up to its name last night by getting fans pumped up for the upcoming season with dancing, contests, and scrimmages.

DJ Natty Heavy spun some tunes while the players from both the men’s and women’s basketball teams were introduced, tossing goodies into the crowd and dancing their way to line-up with their teammates. Head coaches Doug Wojcik and Natasha Adair took the floor to say a few words to Cougar supporters, and then the real fun began. Both basketball teams performed their choreographed dances, ending with their version of "Gangnam Style" that proved to be quite the crowd-pleaser.

But if there’s anything we gathered from last night’s Maroon Madness, it’s that Canyon Barry knows how to dunk a basketball. With a history of slam dunking success in his family — his brother Brent Barry was the 1996 NBA Slam Dunk Contest champion — Canyon has it in his blood. A red-shirt Freshman, Barry began wowing the crowd during the Slam Dunk Contest with his one-handed dunk over teammate Bart Benton, who was seated in the middle of the key in front of a ball rack, off the pass from sophomore Pat Branin. Barry won the competition hands-down by tossing the ball into the air, removing his jersey to show off the “Perfect 10” written on his chest, and dunking the ball into the basket.

After the contests, we watched scrimmages from both teams, giving us a preview of the upcoming season. Erin Hall stood out with her ability to shoot nothing-but-net 3-pointers, and Connor Barry stole the show again by doing “granny shots” at the free throw line — just like his dad, retired NBA player Rick Barry, was known for back in the day.

You can see the men’s basketball team play this Saturday at TD Arena for an exhibition game against USC-Aiken. Both teams will officially open the season in a men's and women's basketball doubleheader scheduled for Friday, Nov. 9 at TD Arena. The CofC women will play Coastal Carolina at 4 p.m. followed by the CofC men against Towson at 7:30 p.m. To purchase men's and women's basketball season tickets, call the CofC Ticket Office at 1-843-953-COFC (2632).
