Local woman raising money after runaway dog stabbed

10-year old Luka recovering

Luka recovers at the vet post-surgery
It's a story most pet owners can relate to: A door or gate blows open and lets a beloved animal loose in the neighborhood. This week, the same thing happened to former City Paper columnist Caitlin Cahill. Her 10-year-old dog Luka got out of her yard — and it almost cost Luka her life.

According to Cahill's GoFund page, after Luka got out of Cahill's yard, she encountered a man and his two dogs. The man filed a police report claiming that Luka attacked his pet, and he responded with a knife, stabbing Luka twice in her left side and slashing her throat. The resulting cut was nine-inches long and four-inches deep, but fortunately the knife missed Luka's vital organs and artery. Luka spent four hours in surgery with an emergency vet and is now recovering. Warning: Post-surgery images of Luka's wounds posted on the fundraising page may be graphic for some.

Cahill is currently looking into legal recourse against the slasher, so she wasn't able to speak with the City Paper on record. On the GoFund page, Cahill writes:

The police report the man filed states that his dogs had NO injuries, and the emergency vet told the police that there was no way my dog was trying to harm the other dog. She was doing what most female dogs do, trying to hold down the other dog who was being aggressive.

No matter what happens legally, emergency vet bills are expensive, and supporters have been donating money to Cahill and Luka through GoFund. The total so far has surpassed Cahill's estimated costs of $3,500. Additional funds will go to aftercare for Luka and potential legal fees.

This is what City paper reports now days? !! A girl who wrote there 10 years ago dog gets outta yard, man protects his dogs from this pit bull, and he's the criminal!!?? As a lawyer, this shit won't make it to court. Joke..., donate money to her PBR fund (vet bill) if ur the sucker they think u are. Last pit bull broke out of a dtown yard mauled a five year old. truth4all- You're a LAWYER, and you type like that? I hope u never represent me. Typically, when a pit bull mauls another living creature, that creature sustains injuries. What is your theory as to why the knife wielder's dogs had none? I'd like to hear them, counselor.

Please, take your inane idiocy elsewhere since you can't even be bothered to review the basic facts of the case. You're out of your element here, amateur. Exposed.

Where did you go to school? Does ITT Tech have a law school now? I didn't know people who lack basic reading and comprehension skills could become lawyers.

My guess is truth4all is either the throat slasher himself or some other knife welding psycho just looking for someone to stab. Maybe I'll just shoot the next guy I see walking down the street and say I was afraid of being attacked because he fit a "stereotype". The last fatal dog report I heard of was a golden retriever.

This pedestrians reaction was extreme and I'd be more afraid of a person like this roaming the neighborhood than a dog, maybe even a rabid one. I'm hoping the best for Luca and her family. They definitely deserve a cold PBR after an awful stressful event like this.

Dear Truth4all,

I see that you are a truth and liberty seeking patriotic American. God knows we need more of those! I completely understand your distrust of the media. Many times they get these dog attack story facts all mixed up and tossed around. Hell did you know that there are over 20 breeds of dog that are incorrectly identified as pit bulls? We all know that News reporters aren't geniuses. They get stuff wrong a lot. Did you also know that pitbulls pass the American Temperament Test with a rate of a little over 86%? That's higher than over 121 other dog breeds. That's higher than Golden Retrievers at 84%. Also the Staffordshire Bull Terrier scored 90.7% and the American Staffordshire Bull Terrier scored at 84%; These are both breeds that are commonly mistaken as being "pit bulls" due to their close relation.

Here I'll site my sources because I understand you're a skeptical freedom fighter in this mad world of hippy liberal bias: (http://einhorninsurance.com/california-ins… You can also read more about the Temperament test and the passing rates here: http://atts.org/breed-statistics/statistic…)

More often than not Pit bulls are the VICTIMS of abuse. It's when us Truth seeking patriotic Americans shoot from the hip and mouth off about something we know only what we saw on tv that we are supporting to further stigmatize and hurt the reputation of this breed. YOU TRYING TO BE ALL "EDGEY" ON THE INTERNET CONTRIBUTES TO NEGLIGENCE AND MISUNDERSTANDING.

Also Pbr fund? Are you that poor that you'd need a fund to afford a cold pabst?

"The Mount Pleasant Police Department found Cahill at fault Tuesday. Officers wrote him a $170 ticket for an at-large animal, and another $1,092 citation for a vicious dog."--Post and Courier

According to the P and C article, the pit bull already had the labradoodle by the throat, so I'd have to say the labradoodle's owners response was appropriate.
Control your dogs at all times and things like this won't happen.
This goes especially for those who think that beach lease laws don't apply to them.

"and the emergency vet told the police that there was no way my dog was trying to harm the other dog". So the emergency vet was there? I find it incredible that this article (as written) made it past the editor's desk.

Wow. The "victim" has made $4500, which more than exceeds the vet bill. U think she's gonna donate that money maybe to SPCA or some good animal saving cause? Doubt it. U people are suckers...I feel for the labradoodles owner , dealing w fucking idiots like y'all that feel sorry for the girl because her dog attacked him. Pathetic view of this story. Read the P&C if u want the WHOLE story, not just the side of the ex city paper employee who had them tell her side. U r labeling the real victim in this a Slasher??!! Really, cause a breed of dog known for mauling people attacked him and his dog( while his dog was leashed by the way)!!??

Does this dog have any prior history in its 10 year of being aggressive towards other animals or humans? That information is important. Large dogs can scare people when rushing toward someone, but I can't imagine someone pulling out a knife on their nightly walk through his affluent neighborhood and stabbing a dog twice! AND THEN slashing its throat that long and deep. This man was trying to kill that animal And what excessive force! Do you think rabid vicious pit bulls are roaming the mean street of Belle Hall? Give me a break. Just like all the stories of police murdering family pets bc they rushed over to them or "seemed aggressive". Peoples knee jerk reactions to certain breeds and over-reaction to typical dog behavior has gotten out of hand! Demand action against these people and help educate others on dog breeds who are unjustly blamed. This man is a danger to pets...and who knows, possibly people if he tends to react with such behavior. And the slashers name is Charles Van de Carr. You can find that in the other article at P&C.

I lived with this dog for years with my little dog, whom by the way my dog has an aggressive way of meeting other dogs. I've personally seen her do to him what was described in the P/C what she was doing to that guys dog. And never was I worried or concerned that she was going to harm him in any way shape or form period! This is how dogs communicate with each other, and until people can get past their narrow minded ways, and actually do some research on whatever it is that they are afraid of, things like this will continue! Not too long ago other breeds were being stereotyped! The pitbull happens to be the original babysitting breed. An animal you entrusted with your children. It's the people, not the breed that make the dog a "bad" dog.

So was that dude supposed to wait until his dog was being mauled before doing something? Everyone is up in arms because his dog doesn't have any injuries. Well I call that good reaction time. And how was this guy also supposed to know that Luka was a sweet dog without a history of violence all while Luka had her jaws around the labradoodle?

Anyone who has been bitten by a PB whilst jogging (me) would completely understand. The lady who owned the PB said "he is just playing" before he got my leg. Also, if you were walking your PB and a mountain lion or chupacabra jumped on it what would you do? Take a picture for ICanHazRippedOutThroat?

It's true that pit bulls are misunderstood. They have jaws like a vice and no other dog or person has a chance. That's why vicious dogs who attack other dogs or people shouldn't be tolerated. First the vicious dog attacks your dog, who is a complete wimp and dosn't like to fight. Your dog yelps and cries as it is being mauled but a pit bull that's jaws are like vices and just shreds right through your dogs skin. If you are a girl than your only option is watching your pet get mauled to death. Or you can jump in and risk getting mauled yourself. My lab was attacked twice by a pit bull and a massif. Even if you are jogging on the beach where it's against the law to have a dog off a leash, sure enough there will be someone with a pit bull letting it run around. This reminds me I need to get some more pepper spray. I see this gangster with a vicious pit bull that is on a leash but one day that dog might break lose and there is no way I could get away from it even on my bike. Wouldn't be surprised at all if that dog kills someone on the green way.

Didn't she used to be a reporter and web master for the City Paper? That would certainly explain the discrepancy between the Post and Courier's article versus this one. Talk about reporter bias.

People, keep your goddamn dogs on their leashes when you're outside or move to the country where they can roam free. Not all dogs are aggressive and violent, but they are like children - I don't want them all up in my shit regardless. And the owners of dogs and children tend to think their offspring and pets are way less annoying/disturbing than they actually are.

people who buy or adopt pitbulls have a need to make a statement. Out of all the knowledge of their jaws and history of attacks and what they were bred for which is to interact with bulls these people STILL buy them. Our husky puppy was attacked by a pitbull and he would not let him go even with kicking and hitting with a chain leash he latched on tight. THe idiotic owners blamed our puppy and the idiotic animal control decided to quarantine our 5 month puppy instead of the vicious pitbull. This breed should be outlawed in virginia as it has been in maryland.
