Debate - Neither candidate held back last night as former Gov. Mark Sanford and Elizabeth Colbert Busch squared off in their only major debate of the special election cycle. Both threw jabs at the other over labor unions, local federal spending, congressional politics, and campaign finance in front of a feisty packed house at the Citadel. After a Goose Creek forum tonight, both return to the campaign trail, with election day one week from today.

Haley to help Sanford - Gov. Nikki Haley will attend a fundraiser for her predescessor tomorrow, though there are conflicting reports about whether the event will be held downtown (The State) or in Mount Pleasant (AP).

Paul to S.C. - Kentucky Senator Rand Paul will make a trip (AP) to South Carolina for a state GOP fundraiser on June 28. Earlier this month, there were reports (Politico) that Paul had hoped he would get the speaking spot at the party's annual Silver Elephant Dinner this weekend, which later went to Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.

Boston - It was announced yesterday (AP) that Judy Clarke, who has served as the defense attorney for S.C. woman Susan Smith, Boulder shooter Jared Loughner, and Unabomber Ted Kaczynski, has been appointed to defend accused Boston bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Smith, Loughner, and Kaczynski were each sentenced to life sentences rather than the death penalty.

PGA champ's brother works at CofC - Pro golfer Billy Horschel, who nailed a 27-foot birdie putt (YouTube) to win his first PGA event this weekend, has a Holy City connection in his brother, Chris (Live5), who works as the director of sports medicine at the College of Charleston.
