Candidates file for Ford seat - Seven Democrats (AP), including former Charleston city councilman and SCSU board member Maurice Washington (T&D) will face off in an August primary (P&C) to determine who will go on to the October 1 special election to fill the seat left vacant by former state Senator Robert Ford, who resigned last month after he was called out for irregular spending of campaign funds, including "gag gifts" at two adult novelty stores.

"The Impacted" of I-526 - Despite wording passed by Charleston County Council last year stipulating "good faith efforts" (P&C) by the county to compensate people within 1,000 feet of the area planned for I-526, Council Chair Teddy Bryor said "We're not going to put money in anybody's pocket. Somebody took it the wrong way." But fellow council member Colleen Condon says she and her colleagues haven't heard from staff on progress either way, "We have full-time staff supposedly competent to build a federal highway, but they haven't gotten back to us on this."

Riley ain't snobby - Charleston Mayor Joe Riley is disputing a recent Travel+Leisure ranking that calls the Holy City (ahem) one of the snobbiest cities in the nation, "Charleston is the most gracious and least snobby city I've ever been in," said the 10-term mayor.

DHEC asks justices for help - State health officials (State) aren't sure what to do now that a Gov. Nikki Haley veto eliminated funding for the enforcement arm of the state's certificate of need law, which regulates heavy spending on health care services and facilities.
