The amount of electricity used by holiday lights this time of year would (and probably does) make environmentalists gasp, but Santee Cooper is one place where they can breathe a sigh of relief. Conserving energy is the name of the game at their Celebrate the Season Holiday Driving Tour. The holiday light tour, which lasts about 25 minutes, includes a winding route through Santee Cooper’s headquarters and the Old Santee Canal Park with dozens of animated light displays. These LED lights, which are brighter and more colorful than typical Christmas lights, are all powered with 100 percent green power by Santee Cooper and are 90 percent more energy efficient. If you go on the weekend, check out the holiday fair, which features local art vendors, live music, a carousel, food and drink vendors, and the chance to visit with Santa. All gate proceeds will benefit charities serving Berkeley County. “It’s a great outing for families and friends and because the revenues it raises are donated to charities, it’s a gift that keeps on giving,” says Santee Cooper’s Mollie Gore.
