Pumped up kicks

Sporting a newly-acquired blond mustache at the Griffon's 'Stache Bash last Thursday, we found it rather difficult to drink our Holy City Category 2 IPA without leaving half of it on our face. So we have to commend those participating in this year's Movember, a month-long event that encourages fellas to grow mustaches to raise awareness for men's health issues. The Griffon did their part by donating a dollar from each sale of a Palmetto, Holy City, or New Belgium beer.

All of the gentlemen tending bar already sported handsome sets of whiskers, which the other patrons would soon be striving to attain. Ladies from Gents Barber Spa set up a straight shaving station in the bar for any guys that wanted a fresh start for the month's facial hair growth. We only saw a few takers. To make sure the women didn't feel left out, adhesive mustaches were handed out.

On Saturday, we left our 'stache at home as we ventured out in search of more fun. The Mt. Pleasant Beerfest was hosted at the Highway 17 Mellow Mushroom on Saturday and we decided to make the trek off the peninsula. The day reminded us of a giant tailgate, but with slices of pepperoni pizza instead of hot dogs and hamburgers. The band played popular hits, and for those not in the mood to get down, a truck full of video games and big screen televisions blasted the day's football games. We're self-proclaimed beer snobs, so we were excited to see that local breweries Palmetto and Holy City were in attendance, but less than enthused that Pacifico and Coors Light — beers we could try at any gas station — were also on the line-up. We reminded ourselves that the event was raising money for the Windwood Farm Home for Children, and as far as charity events go, the Beerfest was a hit. However, we've come up with a rule for beer festivals: if none of the patrons are wearing pretzel necklaces, it may not be up to our usual Brewvival standards.

After napping off the several samples of Palmetto's Ghost Ride brew we drank, it was time to "get sneaky" at the launch party for Sneaker, a new shoe store at 237 King Street. We veered off the quiet street and down a crimson-lit corridor to find a rocking courtyard party complete with DJs and people dressed much hipper than us. We were greeted with a brightly-colored concoction, topped with a rock candy garnish. JeffET was spinning some Wu-Tang as guest mingled and checked out the gorgeous new space. Dark wood, high ceilings, and brightly-lit shelves created a dapper setting for sneakerheads to check out the merchandise.

Though we normally stick to heels, this collection of shoes had us rethinking our footwear fashions. Stylist Andrea Serrano was in attendance and pointed out a few fresh pairs she thought we might like. Jostling past the crowd, we found Matt Stevens, a designer we've been following on Instagram, signing copies of his book, MAX100. It's a graphic exploration of Nike's iconoclastic Air Max 1. Kids seemed excited to chat him up as they explored the shop. As the party got more crowded, we noticed that every guest in attendance looked straight off of a street-style photo shoot. It looks like the cool crowd has found their new hangout and sneaker supplier.
