Charleston Music Fest

When: Fri., Jan. 27, 8 p.m. 2012

The College of Charleston School of the Arts welcomes the Poinsett Piano Trio to the Charleston Music Fest. Since their formation in 2008, the trio of Furman faculty members has been performing lively chamber music internationally to reflect the life of the trio’s namesake, Charleston-born statesman and botanist Joel Roberts Poinsett. Playing some of their own favorite pieces, such as Antonin Dvorak’s “Dumky Trio, Op. 90,” Maurice Ravel’s “Trio in A minor,” and Edvard Greig’s “Andante con moto in C minor for Piano Trio” at this year’s Charleston Music Fest, the group is well studied in various chamber music configurations. While they refer to themselves as a “piano trio,” the members consist of only one pianist, David Gross, accompanied by cellist Christopher Hutton and violinist Deirdre Hutton. Hutton says the trio is planning an evening of vibrant contrasts by combining gypsy styles with jazz and bluesy harmonies.
