How many times have you gone out to see stand up comedy and spent the entire show thinking, stand up? More like sit down! Am I right? Eh? If you thought that was funny, you probably have low standards. Treat yourself to some actually funny jokes at Dusty Slay’s Homegrown Stand Up Showcase. Theatre 99 has hosted the showcase before, but this time the line-up is particularly promising. Host Dusty Slay, whom City Paper readers voted this year’s Best Local Comic will lead this month’s lineup: David Corley, a local favorite who puts a humorous spin on the all-too-relatable life of a working professional with a wife and kids; Andy Rider, the Charleston Stand Up Competition’s second-place winner; and Sam Jackel, a Theatre 99 cast member who is doing this one last show in Charleston before he takes off for New York City. Although Slay usually arranges for a newcomer to get some stage time, this Friday night he’s mixing it up. The smaller lineup allows each comedian to get a longer timeslot without making the show run late. The Stand Up Showcase is “straight-up stand up,” as Slay puts it, so the audience has no need to do anything but sit back with drinks in hand and laugh their asses off after a long week.
