El Centro Americano Restaurant and Grocery Staff Pick

Hours: 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Closed Wed.

Price: $$

Way out on the edge of the fairgrounds lies this hybrid Latin grocery and restaurant. That wouldn't be such a distinguishing feature in this part of town if not for its decidedly Central American flavor. The Salvadorean cuisine brings in influences from Nicaragua to Panama, and both the grocery shelves and the short order cooking in the back will have you feeling as if you just stepped into a Latin market somewhere south of Mexico. Besides the overflowing plates of rice, beans, and fried plantains, one should not miss the papusas, which offer a braised meat filling surrounded by crispy masa dough that's been fried in lard. —Jeff Allen, Dish (Summer 2010)
