Charleston and New Orleans draw a lot of comparisons. The architecture and the party scene first come to mind — and we have to admit that NOLA may have a slight advantage on the partying. Have you seen Bourbon Street? But Charleston wants to give New Orleans a run for its party title, so five years ago the Krewe of Charleston decided to put on its own Mardi Gras. And at this year’s Royal Masquerade Ball on Saturday night, Elise Testone will perform, Sen. Marlon Kimpson will party, and Miss South Carolina Brooke Mosteller will let the good times roll … like a mobile home. And Krewe of Charleston Director Donnie Bulliard hinted that Mick Jagger’s people have confirmed his attendance at the fete. We’ll have to wait and see on that one, but the party will rock with or without him. It’s BYOM (bring your own masque) with an open bar and Cajun fare. The following day, it’s the Grand Finale and Cajun Food Festival and Fais Do Do. See floats travel through the convention center and catch beads while nom-noming on shrimp po’ boys, crawfish, and étouffée. Rockin Dopsie and the Zydeco Twisters will perform some NOLA jams.
