When: Fri., Jan. 25, 5-8 p.m. and Sat., Jan. 26, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. 2013
We don’t usually think of battles when we think of portrait painting, but we’ll get to see one firsthand this weekend when the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry hosts the Fr3shArt Portrait Battle, an art competition to benefit the Lowcountry arts organization Fr3shArt. Twenty-four local artists, including Hirona Matsuda and Reynier Llanes, will be painting and drawing models from the Hat Ladies of Charleston. The event begins on Friday, when the museum will open its doors for free for guests to watch the artists take up their paintbrushes and battle it out on the canvas. Then on Saturday, museum guests can participate in the contest by drawing their own portraits of the models. “It’s a lively opportunity for families to take advantage of museum activities while sparking children’s inner artist with hands-on crafts,” says CML’s McKown Bridges. Regular CML activities will be available on Saturday, but not on Friday. Diggity Doughnuts will be on-site Saturday as well.
