As the wise boys of Semisonic sang, "Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end." And this month we're reminded of all the goodbyes we'll be saying, but we're particularly saddened that we have to bid adieu to one of our favorite guilty pleasures, Southern Charm. But we shall persevere and get excited about all the new — and free — events we've got to look forward to, like early celebrations for Cinco de Mayo.
Monday It's a sad day for us at the CP office. Southern Charm will be going off the air after tonight, but Mellow Mushroom is hosting a viewing party of the reunion show to at least help us deal — a.k.a. drink — our sorrows away.
Andrew Smock's Revision exhibition closes on April 30. Better check out the interesting facts Smock brings to our attention, like the tale of Patrick Swayze and the dolphin, before it's too late, which means before Wednesday.
Tuesday Take a minute — or 30 — and appreciate some free classical music at Charleston Academy of Music's rush hour concert.
Head to Manny's to test your music trivia. Can you name that tune in 3 seconds?
You probably aren't going to the James Beard awards, but you can at least taste something that the attendees will be eating. Duvall Catering and Matt Lee team up for a sampling of the dish that the Lee brothers will be preparing for the awards dinner.
Wednesday Stop by the Tin Roof to browse some crafts at the bazaar hosted by the dive bar.
Get your Wednesday dose of woosa with some guided meditation at Bridge to Avalon.
Get thee to the Halsey to check out the talent of the next generation at the Young Contemporaries show before it closes this weekend.
Thursday Blast Off into the weekend as you hear Theatre 99 comedians try out new material.
Call and make an appointment for a diabetes screening courtesy of East Cooper Medical Clinic.
The veggies may cost money, but the music is free at the North Charleston Farmers Market.
Friday Get down on Friday with not one but two art walks. It's the quarterly French Quarter art walk and First Fridays on Broad Street.
Stop by Palmetto Brewing Co. for some free music at their Loading Dock Series. Sadly, the suds aren't free.
Saturday It's not technically Cinco de Mayo, but olé. Who need's an excuse to party. Hit up Fuel downtown or YoBo in West Ashley for some pre-May 5 margs.
You could always forgo the sombrero for a different kind of topper — like the one perfect for the Kentucky Derby. Check out The Alley's derby day party for some arcade horse racing, bourbon, and barbecue.
Head to Brittlebank Park for the Dragon Boat festival and see 67 teams compete in the seventh annual Charleston Dragon Boat Festival benefiting the cancer survivor programs.
Grab the little ones and scoot over to Folly to learn about sea turtles' nesting and how to help protect them.
It seems like this Saturday is all about early celebrations. Case in point: The Sparrow celebrates Star Wars' day, a day early with their May the Fourth Be With You party on May 3.
Sunday Make it a multicultural weekend and hit up Fast and French's 30th anniversary.
