Halloween in the Swamp

When: Oct. 18-20, 7:30-10:30 p.m. 2012

People can be picky about their spooks. Some like zombies, but hate clowns. Others are cool with clowns, but can’t stand talking dolls. And some, of course, like swamp monsters. If you prefer your spooks to be dripping swamp water and oozing muck, then Cypress Gardens’ Haunted Swamp experience might be just your cup of tea. “People bring a lot of their own fears with them, so there’s not a lot we have to do,” says Cypress Gardens’ Tracy Cook. But they do quite a bit anyway. Guests at the swamp are rowed out among the alligators and cypress knees, to be dropped off at a haunted walking trail which you’ll have to brave in order to make it back. “Sometimes there are people in the trees, sometimes they’re even in the water,” says Cook. “We judge our success by how many people we get to pee their pants.” Those who want to skip the scary can head straight to the Family Fun section, which will feature kid-friendly Halloween storytelling, a marshmallow roast, music, a jack ‘o’ lantern-lit walking trail, and plenty of food for sale. And if you happen to see an alligator, you might want to back away. Chances are it’s not part of the fun.
