There’s an old witch in Charleston this month. She has a big oven, a craving for roasted Lowcountry children, and she’ll be making an appearance in Sprouts Musical Theater’s production of Hansel and Gretel. You know the story: a brother and sister get lost in the woods and stumble upon a gingerbread house, which unfortunately contains a witch with a penchant for kid meat. This production is closely based on the original story, but it’s got some added features, including music, to make it even more appealing to a young audience. “The lyrics are funny, the ballads are catchy, there are magical special effects, and lots of audience participation,” says Sprouts artistic director Stan Gill. Kids will get prime seating just inches away from the action, which considering the situation, might not be the most comforting thought. But then, if the witch takes your kids, you’ll never have to hire a babysitter again.
