International Piano Series: Steven Lin

When: Tue., Jan. 15, 8 p.m. 2013

At age 14, Steven Lin soloed with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Two years ago, he finished a performance in Japan during a 6.5 magnitude earthquake. In other words, he’s not only a musical prodigy but a consummate professional with apparently inhuman powers of concentration. The International Piano Series’ founder and artistic director Enrique Graf saw Lin perform at the Hilton Head International Piano Competition and immediately knew he wanted to include Lin in the series. “So many performers apply to come play in this series each year, but only five get chosen. So it is a big deal that Graf sought out Lin,” says the Series’ executive director, Chee-Hang See. Among the pieces Lin will perform are Frédéric Chopin’s famous Four Impromptus. “This is one of the most exciting and unique young musical personalities I have heard in a while,” Graf says. “The program has a wonderful mix of old-time favorites and plenty of fireworks.”
