Asheville-based instrumental combo the As-Is Ensemble returns to Charleston this week as part of the Jazz Artists of Charleston’s Upstairs at McCrady’s series (on the second floor at 2 Unity Alley). Led by composer and keyboardist Michael Bellar, the band performs in support of a fine LP titled Turned on Turned Up. Skillful and versatile, Bellar and his bandmates — bassist Rob “Johnson” Jost and drummer Brad Wentworth — specialize in a modern, off-kilter style of alternative jazz. Bellar plays an antique Wurlitzer, a Hammond B3 organ, and a baby grand. He’s old pals with the fellas from Jump, Little Children, so watch out for a possible guest appearance. There’ll be two separate shows on Saturday at 7 p.m. and at 10 p.m. Advance tickets are available through the JAC box office.
