MLK Jr. Celebration

When: Jan. 13-27 2013

Sure, MLK Day is a day off of work or school, but that doesn’t mean you should be spending it on your couch catching up on Project Runway. The YWCA is celebrating Dr. King’s legacy for two weeks with events including nine area worship services, a business and professional breakfast with Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr., a panel discussion on work and service, a holiday parade, a youth speak-out opportunity, and a grand celebration finale, making it the Palmetto State’s largest MLK, Jr. celebration. In addition to honoring Dr. King, the events emphasize the valuable role that hard work and service play in our community. “It’s vital for our youth to be working for the American dream,” says event chairman Mike Whack. “There is still much to be done.” Guest speakers will include Civil Rights leaders U.S. Congressman John Lewis of Ga., who was chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, and S.C. AFL-CIO President Emeritus Donna Dewitt. Both will receive awards at the MLK Tri-County Ecumenical Service on Sun. Jan. 27.
