Out of the Shadows

When: Sat., June 2, 2-5 p.m. 2012

Artist and scholar Winston Kennedy will speak at Redux about the representation of the African-American male in European and American art, particularly drawings and prints. Kennedy will focus not only on the representation of African-American males as subordinates, but also on the artists who have challenged this idea in art. Kennedy specializes in printmaking and has been a professor and chairman of the art departments at Howard University and Claflin University. His project “Out of the Shadows: The Image of Black Men in Fine Arts and Popular Prints” began in 2002 while Kennedy was scholar in residence at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in New York. He is now an independent artist based in Charleston and is currently working on four projects all centered around African Americans in art.
