@Francis - this is not the same Pollo Tropical chain as Miami.

Even though this is not your typical Charleston restaurant it fits right in with the North Charleston "culture". The charcoal cooked chicken was delicious and plentiful, the ribs were perfectly seasoned and fell off the bone, the plantains were delicious. For the amount of food you get, the prices are quite reasonable- a whole chicken plate serves 2 people for $14.99. While the restaurant itself could use some updating, it is the food that will make me want to go back. Also, the waitress was very nice and allowed be to substitute black beans for french fries - and she just kept bringing food out for us to try.

If you love meat cook on a grill this is the place to eat. the chicken and ribs marinated and seasoned and oh so good. Pollo also has fried plantains cooked brown and caramelized with a little crunch, there is also yucca, tostones, black beans and rice. They serve some latin standards like tacos, quesadillas as well as a spicy/fruity shrimp tropical. I have tried the other things but the big bang is the grilled chicken go ahead and order a whole bird so you can take some home. I have used ,my leftovers in quesadillas, soup, pot pie... I could go on about how great this place is but you should try it yourself. During the day you can watch the latin soap opera's with the local latin population or in the evening's they play salsa music. Don't forget to order a mango drink to wash it all down with! Go Now!!

Good every time we go. We live in Mount Pleasant and don't get down Dorchester that much, but we sometimes make the special trip.

While we like several menu items, I have to say my favorite is the tongue sandwich. Yes I know! "Tongue?!?" That's the typical American response anytime I suggest this menu item. I'm a "normal" American redneck and I can't get enough of the tongue sandwich at this place! Seriously!

Be adventurous and step outside your comfort zone every now and then.

Just order a 1/4 chicken plate and you will be happy... especially if you add an order of plantains. So delicious, so filling. Sure, the restaurant decor is nothing to write home about, but nothing in that area of N. Charleston is all that nice. The people that run Pollo Tropical are super friendly with good service though. If you want good food, check this place out!

I had the charco-grilled chicken lunch at Pollo Tropical. My chicken was overcooked and dry. I had to cover it with a liberal amount of sauce to make it edible. The sides were bland and uninteresting. I did enjoy an order of their fried plantains, that was the only good thing about my visit.

This place is not like the ones in Miami surrounding areas. It is more Mexican cuisine but uses the chain name. Oh well

This restaurant sucks, it really sucks and has no place in Charleston. The chicken was burnt, service was bad and it was really expensive. Do not spend $1 there, you will regret it. Oh yeah, there was a roach that crawled under my table. Nuff said.

Pollo tropical is not usually a Mexican chain. There are more Latino foods to enjoy that are not Mexican. Pollo tropical would be more carribean like Dominican or Cuban cuisine. At least that's what it is in Miami. I haven't visited the one in Charleston but if its anything like the chain in South Florida, then its great latino(not Mexican) cuisine. Much better than the fake Cuban Bohio in James Island.
