Scottish Games & Highland Gathering

When: Sat., Sept. 19 2009

It’s a little bit Scottish. It’s a little bit Lowcountry. If you love the atmosphere of the Boone Hall Plantation and men in kilts strike your fancy, the 38th Annual Scottish Games & Highland Gathering is a must-see event. For the music lover, bagpiper Neil Anderson, harpist Candyce Dunham, and celtic band Rathkeltair are set to perform, and they’ll also have piping and drumming competitions. Love dogs? They’ve got border collie demonstrations (sheep wrangling dogs that originated in Scotland). The sports lover in you will enjoy professional and amateur olympic-style heavy athletic events — like watching beefy guys throw tree trunks. They’ve also got Highland and Scottish country dancing and fiddling, Scottish cuisine, and souvenirs for sale so you won’t forget this Scot-tastic day. Kids will enjoy a less intense-version of the big boy games. Last year, over 6,000 people gathered to take in the sights and sounds, and it’s all to benefit the Scottish Society of Charleston. —Amber N. Crago
