Southeast Zine Fest

When: Sat., Oct. 20 2012

Where’s the zine love these days? These crafty, quirky, DIY publications were self-published way before self-publishing was cool, but they’ve never gotten their moment in the limelight, at least here in Charleston. Until now, that is. City Paper staffer Susan Cohen and skirt! Magazine editor Margaret Pilarski have teamed up to create the Southeast Zine Fest, which will bring zine makers, readers, and distributors together for one big zine-lovin’ party. “Charleston is such an amazingly creative and outspoken city, but I was shocked to find out that a lot of zinemakers here didn’t even know one another,” says Pilarski. “I hope after this event we get more Charlestonians making them, because I want to read them.” The day will feature speakers, live music, food trucks, and the opportunity to contribute to the fest’s own communal zine, which will be available after the event. For those who’ve never contributed to, or even heard of a zine, there’s really just one rule: let your creativity run wild. Afterward take that inspiration home and start making your own zine, and make sure to send a copy to Pilarski. You heard her: she wants to read it.
