SpaceCraft Studios Grand Opening Party

When: Sat., Aug. 25, 5 p.m. 2012

Avondale recently got even cooler with the addition of SpaceCraft Studios, a space dedicated to the art and practice of DIY. Though owner Allison Merrick has been offering classes for a little while now, on Saturday she’s officially opening her doors to Charleston with a grand opening crafting party. Guests will be able to try out lots of hands-on activities, Merrick says, including “sewing, screenprinting, juggling, button-making, and more.” And what’s a crafting get-together without yummy snacks? The party will be a chance for area crafters and crafting beginners alike to come together and get to know each other, which is important to Merrick. “SpaceCraft’s mission is to become a hub for maker collaboration,” she says. As such, SpaceCraft is always eager to welcome those who have a skill to teach, as well as those who want to learn. Upcoming classes cover sewing, crocheting, and other crafting standbys, as well as more exotic things like creating succulent terrariums, micro-cut LED, and lino-cut printing. But don’t put SpaceCraft in a box — not even a pretty, handmade, fabric-covered one. The hardest part of running the studio, Merrick says, has been defining it. With so much creativity in one spot, who knows what will develop?
