Spoleto Festival USA Auction

When: Fri., Feb. 1, 7 p.m. 2013

Don’t look now, but the 2013 Spoleto Festival USA is standing right next to you. Figuratively speaking, of course. Even though the festival doesn’t begin until the end of May, this Friday’s auction is the real kick-off to the Spoleto season, says Spoleto’s Jessie Bagley. “It’s the first time that festival-lovers gather together in the New Year to talk about the upcoming season.” Appropriately, the auction always features performances by exceptional artists, and this year guests will get to hear former Spoleto performer and jazz pianist Cyrus Chestnut along with the Charlton Singleton Jazz Ensemble. The evening will also include cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, a seated tapas dinner by Cru Catering, music, and both online and live bidding. Proceeds from the auction benefit the Spoleto Festival USA orchestra, which comprises young musicians from all over the country. “These musicians are often considered to be the busiest artists at Spoleto,” says Bagley. “Without the support of our donors and ticket buyers and proceeds from events such as the auction, we would not be able to bring the 85-plus orchestra members to Charleston.”
