That palpable, anticipatory buzz in the air means Spoleto Festival USA and its little sister, Piccolo Spoleto, are upon us once again. Every year around this time, when bathing suits come out and the beaches start to beckon, downtown Charleston becomes a hotbed of cultural liveliness. Some of the world’s best musicians, theater companies, visual artists, dancers, and acrobats converge on our fair city all at once — not to mention all the people who come to see them do what they do. From Marion Square, which adds an outdoor art exhibition to its regular Farmers Market offerings, to the local theaters that see patrons coming and going nearly every night for three weeks, the life that Spoleto and Piccolo bring to the city is undeniable. As always, we’ve compiled a guide to this year’s festival, complete with recommended itineraries for the Cheapskate, the Trendsetter, the Sophisticate, and the Family Man/Woman. And if you don’t fall into any of those categories — or even if you do — you’ll find plenty of shows and performances to mix and match to create your ideal festival experience. To start the coming weeks off right, make sure you stop by the Farmers Market in Marion Square this weekend. The market will be open for extended hours on Saturdays and Sundays until June 9. And keep your ears open. You never know what insider tips you might pick up in the crowd.
