When: Sat., Nov. 3, 8 a.m.-12 p.m. 2012
What: We bet you didn’t know dogs could race stand-up paddleboards. If you’ve got to see it to believe it, head to Folly Beach this weekend for Charleston SUP Safaris SUPer Scary SUP (stand-up paddleboard) Race. They’ve got categories for your kids, your dog, and you too, whether you’re a SUP pro or a relative newbie. Contestants, both animal and human, are encouraged to come in costume, and based on last year’s race, SUP Safaris’ Tara Anderson expects a strong showing. “Since it’s Halloween, we’ll probably have zombies, other scary things. Everyone comes dressed in costume, and it’s just a fun day.” Once you’ve paddled your arms to exhaustion, head to the Sunset Cay Marina Restaurant for an after-party with food, drinks, and live music. If you don’t have your own paddleboard, SUP Safaris will rent one to you for the sweet price of $10. It’s first come, first served so make sure to arrive early. Fittingly, the race is raising money for the dogs (and other animals) at Pet Helpers that don’t yet have people to take them paddleboarding, and for the Emerson Rose Heart Foundation.
