Description: In Huger, George Nelson and his family designed and constructed a controlled hydroponic greenhouse operation to provide Charleston with tender, fresh lettuces, basils, and micro-greens all year-round. Last year, Sweetbay doubled its greenhouse space and its propagation room size, greatly increasing the quantity of adult red and green lettuces, flavored basils, and baby lettuce mixes they produce. The plants at Sweetbay are the highest quality with unmatched taste, and in the propagation room, you’ll find nutrient-packed custom grown micro-greens like arugula, basils, romaines, butterheads, and multi-lettuces, perfect for artful garnishing, stored in a geothermally supplied cooling system. The environment is kept at controlled temperatures and nutrients are computer monitored 24 hours a day. Nelson says if handled properly, hydroponic food grows faster and stays fresher longer after harvesting. A well system with reverse osmosis produces purified water that hydrates the plants, while a solar-powered stereo provides musical entertainment for farmhands.
