The MisAdventures of the Dunderheads

When: Thu., March 28, 7 p.m. 2013

Though there are lots of films about families reconnecting through unusual circumstances, typically those circumstances do not involve murder — and the families are not like the family in The MisAdventures of the Dunderheads. After hiding away deep in Montana’s mountains for many years, 17-year-old Womple Dunderhead (Haley Joel Osment) kills his best friend and forces his family to confront modern American society. Their grandmother (Olympia Dukakis), who is the only parental figure of the bunch, attempts to flee with Womple and his sister Ella (Alison Brie) to Canada. But without any knowledge of the outside world, the family meets with all kinds of unforeseen obstacles. “The bizarre journey really keeps you guessing, just the way the characters are guessing about their own lives,” says Lizz Biswell, the Halsey Institute’s curator of education and public programs. The MisAdventures of the Dunderheads is part of the Southern Circuit Tour for Independent Filmmakers, which has only featured documentaries this season. “The film has a serious undertone and touches on some societal issues like the documentary films we’ve shown, but [Dunderheads] has a different access point,” Biswell says. “It’s a comedy with famous actors — it should bring in a different audience.” Budding filmmakers should plan to stay for the Q&A, as the film’s director, producer, assistant producer, and production designer will all be in attendance.
