Even if you’ve been a lifelong fan of the children’s classic The Secret Garden, you’re sure to find something new in this production by Charleston Stage, which will present an original adaptation of this timeless favorite. “The Secret Garden is part of our family series,” says Charleston Stage’s director of marketing, Beth Curley. “The play is like the book — an entertaining way to introduce children to classic literature.” And while the play is very close to the book, Charleston Stage has made some small changes. “I opted to create my own adaptation,” says Charleston Stage founder and playwright Julian Wiles. “My goal was to be as faithful as possible to Ms. Burnett’s original story and delightful characters and to tell the story in a simpler and more intimate way than other versions.” After seeing the play, you just might be inspired to stroll down to the Battery and peek in some of Charleston’s own secret gardens.
