We don’t know if shrimp that are caught by a blessed boat taste better, but we’re not going to take any chances. This Sunday, head to Mt. Pleasant’s Memorial Waterfront Park for the yearly Blessing of the Fleet ceremony to honor our local fishermen. The day begins with live music from Southwood, with the blessing procession (otherwise known as a boat parade) beginning at 12:45 p.m. Each boat will receive an official blessing from the pier wishing them a safe and prosperous shrimping season. Afterward, the party picks up with more live music by Southwood and the East Coast Party Band, shagging and shrimp-eating contests, children’s activities, and an arts and crafts show. Guests can also eat their fill of local seafood from restaurants including Red’s Ice House, Gilligan’s, A.W. Shucks, Graze, and others. The festival always benefits a local charity and this year’s beneficiary is the Charleston Port and Seafarer’s Society, which helps meet the needs of those who make their living aboard.
